Senator Odey Promises Swift Passage of College Law

The Commissioner for Education, Senator Stephen Odey Ph D, has pledged to interface with relevant agencies in ensuring the swift passage of enabling laws that will empower the Ministry to regulate the activities of the College of Health Technology in the State.

The Commissioner who gave the assurance during a courtesy visit on him by the Management team of the College of Health Technology in Calabar, stated that the interface in ensuring that the law is passed will enable the institution to benefit from Tetfund programme of the Federal Government.

He commended the Provost for her passion in driving the affairs of the institution and further pledged to liaise with the management team of the college to address any accreditation challenges.

Earlier, the Provost of the College of Health Technology, Calabar, Janet Adah Ph.D said their visit was to identify with the Ministry, while also seeking for directions on issues concerning the the general runnings of the Institution.

She said the law establishing the Institution did not specify any supervisory Ministry, adding that on that ground, the College missed out of Tetfund.

Dr. Adah listed some challenges of the Institution to include: shortage of Manpower, Retirement Age of Non-academics Staff, among others.

Senator Odey informed the College of Health Management team, that as a school saddled with the responsibility to produce qualified graduates who can actively contribute to the health sector, it is imperative to ensure that the college is under the Ministry for proper supervision and guidance.

The Commissioner for Education, further expressed the readiness of the Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu ‘s commitment to reform all the sectors of the State.

MOE CHARGES CR-ITM UGEP ON QUALITY EDUCATIONAL STANDARD

The Commissioner for Education, Senator Stephen Odey Ph D, has charged the Cross River Institute of Technology and Management (CR-ITM) Ugep, to attain quality standard in education and make the institution stand tall amongst its equals in the country.

The Commissioner gave this charge at a courtesy visit paid on him by the Management team of Cross River Institute of Technology and Management (CR-ITM), Ugep, earlier on Monday September 4, 2023.

Senator Odey noted that as a supervisory Ministry, it is important to be abreast with the status of the Institute in areas of; students enrollment, number of courses offered and accredited courses.

The Commissioner further advised the Management of the Institute to sensitize the public on the activities of the institution, stating that, “when you are not informed you are deformed.”

Speaking earlier, the Rector, Cross River Institute of Technology and Management, Ugep, Dr. Jeffery Thompson, stated that the purpose of their visit was to congratulate him on his appointment as Commissioner and to brief him on the activities of the institution.

He listed some challenges faced by the institute to include: Lack of funds, deplorable state of some infrastructures and shortage of Manpower.

Dr. Thompson informed that for the institution to be accredited partially as a Polytechnic and the name change appropriately, there is need to have some courses such as Civil and Electrical Engineering accredited by 2024.

Senator Odey appreciates their visit, while assuring them of how the Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu ‘s led administration is poised to deliver maximally in the education sector of the State.

EDUCATION COMMISSIONER CHARGES ANCOPSS ON ADHERENCE TO MINISTRY’S POLICIES

Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Senator Stephen Odey Ph D, has charged the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) to adhere to the Ministry’s policies and act accordingly for effective service delivery.

The Commissioner made this charge when the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Cross River State paid him a courtesy visit in his office, in Calabar.

The Commissioner stated that, for the school system to be reformed and revitalized, there is need to address abnormalities like illegal levies and under declaration of the students enrollment in schools, adding that such actions are unacceptable and will incure severe consequences under his leadership.

He urged the members of ANCOPSS to be pacesetters by encouraging their subordinates to be more proactive, noting that it would no longer be business as usual, as he will be paying unscheduled visit to the schools.

Earlier, the President of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, Cross River State, Mr Etim Essien said the purpose of their visit was to congratulate the Commissioner on his appointment.

Mr Essien further listed some of the Association’s challenges to include; recruitment of teachers, lack of infrastructure, security and upward reviews of fees.

Senator Odey called for collaboration from the Association in addressing issues bordering them, as he assures of the readiness and commitment of the Senator Prince Bassey Otu ‘s led administration to reform the education sector for the good of all.
